Surrey Square School: Craft & Cooking Sessions

Friday 17th September

Surrey Square School @ediblerotherhithe has been part of the network and running incredible food growing initiatives for several years. The Surrey Square School site has a incredible polytunnel growing spaces for the primary school children to learn about growing fruits, herbs and vegetables, as well as raised beds, fruit trees and even a nursery growing space on the site.

We wanted to create a programme alongside Christina of Edible Rotherhithe to share skills with the staff and children, around crafting with nature and cooking. The weekly sessions began with an introduction to printing with nature, where students had a chance to create their own cards by printing with leaves from the grounds of the school.

We spoke with children about the different trees and fruits the leaves were from including northern catalpa’s, magnolia’s, grapevine’s, buddleia’s, sycamore maple’s, redcurrants and strawberries. The intention was to have the children identifying the plants themselves and using the leaves in their artwork to express their creativity.
