Gibbings House: Children’s Fun Day

Friday 13th August, 12-4pm

The Children’s Fun Day was put together by Sam Jones and the network to bring educational and uplifting activities to the children of Gibbings House, during the summer holidays.

We discussed different types of seeds and used the garden to show their lifecycle from seedling to young plant budding, blooming and turning into a seed head! Together we sowed seeds of beans, peas, nasturtiums and calendula. Local organisation Urban Growth were also kind enough to donate some seedlings for our event. The children learnt about how to plant seedlings and plant development – with the large crops of the beds in the garden – as a reference to the mature vegetables. We potted up seedlings of cauliflower, white and purple sprouting broccoli and kale.

We carried on into the afternoon with a session of crafting with plants, making leaf prints with acrylics and flower/leaf prints through a bashing technique. The children thoroughly enjoyed making prints and working together to create their art!

Many of the children were meeting one another for the first time, so this was a beautiful occasion for children to meet their neighbours and form relationships. They were incredibly supportive of one another’s work, enthusiastic to share their knowledge and willing to work together in activities.
